The 52 Project 2014: 5/52

the 52 project2“A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2014. My goal for the year: highlight her most recently acquired and/or favorite skill, activity, or milestone, in hopes to document her blossoming personality and mind as well as her physical appearance. ” See my series HERE.

Her creativity is blossoming. Her independence is slowly increasing. I’ve noticed these changes taking place quite clearly over the last week.

The biggest indication has been the absence of her tugs on my pant leg and the words, “Mama, up! up!” while I wash dishes or tidy up…anything. Usually, wherever Mama is, Mia isn’t more than a few feet away (or is literally sitting by my feet).

This hasn’t been the case recently. Over the past few days, I’ve been able to wash a whole sink of dishes without interruption. I take that back, I’d interrupt myself to quietly check on her to make sure she’s okay.

She’s been more than okay. She’s been independently playing and entertaining herself. I’ve caught her rocking in her own little rocking chair while reading books in her room. I’ve caught her coloring on her little chalkboard. And I’ve caught her assembling her plastic animal toys on the window sill in the living room, like in the photo above (which is a new activity and interest of hers. These toys only cost $1 each, btw, from Michael’s!). Moments like these are so heartwarming.

Let me just say…hallelujah! Oh I took full advantage of Mia’s new phase by working around the house like a chicken with my head cut off. I got so much done! I feel so accomplished. My fingers are crossed that this phase stays with us for a while.

Just for fun, this is week 5’s portrait from last year in 2013.
