A Portrait A Week: 46/52

“A portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2013.”

week46(rug: IKEA, bodysuit: CarlyMegan )

I’m behind by a week, yet again. Bleh.

This week’s weekly portrait is dedicated to reading!

As Mia grows, she has been becoming more interested in “reading” her books and looking at all of the colorful pictures rather than ripping them to shreds. Reading is an interest and skill that I highly respect and hold great significance in. When I was in Kindergarten, I remember being one of or the best reader in the class (or at least that’s what I was told). As Mia’s attention span lengthens, more and more books will be introduced to her. She usually doesn’t sit still long enough to finish a whole book (unless it consists of a total of 20 words).

As of now, Mia has one very tall (and bright yellow) book shelf in her room. Daddy Dom found it outside of a condo, waiting to be trashed on trash day. He brought it home and I sanded it down and spray painted it. It fit perfectly in Mia’s room.

The next step was to fill it up with books, but this wasn’t any trouble at all since Dominic’s Uncle Yar had been sending us box loads of books he’s been finding at his local flea market (in AZ). We had a few boxes from him in Mia’s room just waiting for a home. We also scored a box of books at Mia’s birthday from Dominic’s Aunt Darlene. I LOVE BOOKS!!! And I can’t tell you how grateful I am that Mia has such a hefty collection of them already. She’s on her way to having her own library in her room. You can never have too many books. I look forward to reading each and every single one of them with her when the time is right.

The finishing touch that I just added last week to her reading area is a “reading rug”. That’s what I’ve been calling it. I found this faux sheepskin at IKEA and as soon as I laid it down in front of her bookshelf, Mia sat on it, rubbed it with her hand and grabbed a book and started “reading”. Perfect! And…the price is perfect. I remember that when I was very small (around age 5) my mom had sheepskins for my brother and I. We loved laying on them while watching TV, reading and playing. We both wish she had kept them for us now. Oh well. This cheap one will do for now and maybe one day I’ll invest in a better quality (pricier) one.

Before you go, don’t forget to enter in my giveaway going on now (last day is 12/2/13) to win a pair of baby/toddler leather moccasins from Freshly Picked!

Here are some of my favorite “portraits” from week 45 (last week):
