The 52 Project 2014: 26/52

the 52 project2“A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2014. My goal for the year: highlight her most recently acquired and/or favorite skill, activity, or milestone, in hopes to document her blossoming personality and mind as well as her physical appearance. ” See my series HERE.

Mia: First time at Kidspace Children’s Museum (more detailed post to follow in the near future)

My new summer schedule (staying at home with the kid) has allowed me to take Mia on fun little outings during the week. I can’t tell you just how much that means to me, to be able to do this. In my eyes, summer is for building and creating memories and for making a fun childhood to look back on. It’s for new experiences, adventures, exploring, laughing, socializing, make-believe, discovering, and more freedom to thrive in many different environments. So far, only 2 weeks into my break from work, we’ve been doing just that.

Mia takes some time to warm up to most anything that is new. On one hand, this frustrates me because I have to coax her to try new things, things that I know for a fact are fun and that she would enjoy. Part of me wishes she would just dive in, take a leap of faith, trust what Mommy is telling her and just have more confidence, I guess. On the other hand, diving in without thought and consideration could lead to more injuries and close calls. I’m not sure which scenario is better.

In this photo, the spot where she’s standing down the little creek is about as far as Mia would travel “down river.” She was much too safe to head down any further even though plenty of other small children were doing so. To the right of the photo (not pictured) there’s a larger wading pool with more buckets and kids. It even took a few seconds for her to want to make her way into there, and she LOVES water! She was definitely a little overly cautious on this afternoon and she held back from the very lively little personality that I know she has.

Okay now just for fun, here is the portrait from last year’s week 26 in 2013 when Mia was enjoying some water play in our backyard.

  1. Lyla was so shy about these things when she was 2 as well but now that she’s 3 she is soooo much more outgoing. The only difference in her life has been her age change so I’m sure Mia will grow out of it too!

    • Tina, that’s SUCH a relief to hear. Seriously. I hope I hope I hope I hope that Mia grows out of it and I’ll do my best to give her the support she needs to do that. Your Lyla looks like such the little social butterfly (at least in your photos). Thanks for the comment :)

  2. This place looks beautiful!! Enjoy this summer and all of it’s glory mama!

    • Thanks Nicole! I’m doing my best to achieve just that and I hope you get to do the same. So far so good :) Thanks for stopping by.

  3. i love this shot so much. that river looks like an enchanted place. <3 thanks for linking over to our post from last week, too! hope you guys are having a great weekend. xo

  4. Thank you so much for the shout out Misty! You are so incredibly good about posting on time, I’m perpetually late when it comes to my weekly portrait! The Kidspace museum looks awesome, I should take Berlin there sometime.

    • Ugh, Jordan it’s tough to do. I think last year there was a point where I was a few weeks behind. Kidspace is definitely a cool spot to know about whenever you’re in the Pasadena area :)
