The 52 Project 2014: 37/52

the 52 project2“A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2014. My goal for the year: highlight her most recently acquired and/or favorite skill, activity, or milestone, in hopes to document her blossoming personality and mind as well as her physical appearance. ” See my series HERE.

Mia and the great outdoors.

She takes after her Daddy when it comes to her love and curiosity for nature. She would prefer to be outdoors more often than not. It’s funny, every time she hears our back sliding door open (which leads to the backyard) she immediately perks up from whatever she’s doing to see if anyone’s heading outside (or if the dogs are just being let in or out). If someone’s heading outside, she books it for the door to make her escape before it comes to a close. If she’s needed at the table to eat a meal, and Daddy needs to go outside to check on the chickens or tend to the garden, he actually has to sneak out to avoid a freak out from her. She’s just got to be outside.

This picture was taken in Big Bear in the backyard of my good friend’s cabin (and a spectacular one at that). We spent a small weekend there, most of which was outside. Their backyard is ginormous. Seriously, when you’re standing at the back door, you can’t even see where the property ends. The many trees in the way don’t help that, either. When we’re there, the dogs and Mia are in heaven because there’s so much space to explore, so many rocks to examine, so many sticks to pick up, so many trees to pee on (dogs, not Mia), so many critters to spot, so many pine cones to collect and so much clean and fresh air to breathe in. Daddy Dom really gets to dive into his element alongside his dogs and his kid and it’s really sweet to see them bond over their shared love.

Lately, here in southern California, the weather has been in the 90s and 100s for the past few weeks or more! It’s downright awful so poor Mia (and dogs) and I have been spending a lot of time indoors. I’m not a heat girl. It makes me downright cranky. I’m really looking forward to cooler weather whenever fall decides to show it’s very missed face. We can’t wait for some nature walkin’ together again.

Okay now just for fun, here is the portrait from last year’s week 37 in 2013 with Grandma (my mom), one of Mia’s most favorite people.

37 week 2013

I’m about a week behind in this project (which I blame my pregnancy side effects for) so hopefully I’ll catch up and become a little more present around here.

  1. She’s getting so big! My daughter is the same way about being outdoors and I LOVE IT!!! Let’s hope they don’t grow up to be those children who sit inside all day and night playing video games or something. I see we are both moms who are working hard to keep our kids out, active, curious, adventurous, etc.
