Ways we beat the summer heat

The heat is on over here in sunny southern California. I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of heat but I don’t want to let that keep me indoors all summer long to avoid it. I want Mia to have plenty of fun in the sun without overheating, so naturally we’ve been gravitating towards anything and everything to do with water.

Here’s a look into some ways we’ve been trying to beat the summer heat while getting every ounce of fun from it at the same time.

First off, we’ve been swimming. We’ve been swimming a lot. Mia can cruise along the side of the pool on her own, now. Check out another day of swimming, HERE.

We’ve been scoping out kid friendly locations that feature water activities, like Kidspace (which I posted about, HERE)…

…and the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center (which I posted about, HERE).

Inflatable water slides are hours of cooling fun. This was at a 3rd birthday party but renting one needs no special occasion. Get the neighborhood kids together one weekend and you’ll hardly see them again until the company comes back to haul it away.

Fruit smoothies are one of my favorite ways to instantly cool down on a hot day. We’ve already hit up our local Jamba Juice and Mia requests it by name. Of course, making your own is more convenient. This smoothie contains a packet of acai puree from Sprouts along with fresh strawberries, blueberries, a banana, some orange juice and a nectarine. It was amazing.

Another super refreshing drink that takes no time to make is simply a glass of iced water with slices of orange and sprigs of mint. We have a ton of mint growing in our garden so lucky for me, I have plenty at my disposal at any given time. Did somebody say Mojito? Yup, that’s on my list of things to make this summer. The ingredients are on my grocery list.

If you’re a fan of iced tea (which we are), make a batch and add the orange slices and mint for an extra pop of flavor and skip the added sugar. So good.

If you don’t have oranges and mint on hand, collect any fruit you do have and experiment with different flavors in your water.

Next watermelon I buy, I’m making watermelon juice to drink. That would taste great with some mint, too. Other fruits that have a high water content are strawberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe, peaches, pineapple, raspberries and oranges. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Giant fruit salad. I love me a good fruit salad. Anyways, until they’re out of season, I’ll be buying a watermelon at each trip to the store. I can’t get enough of it.

Other ways we plan on beating the heat this summer:

Splashing around in an inflatable kiddie pool, having a water balloon fight, running through sprinklers, spending an afternoon at the beach and making homemade popsicles.

How have you been staying cool while enjoying all of the greatness that is summer?

“Heat” is the July writing prompt of The Mommy Blogger Collective. In addition to a monthly writing prompt, the collective hosts a monthly blogger featurette. This month we are featuring Renee of oh renée. A few words from Renée — Oh Renée started as a creative outlet for me a few years ago, a happy place to share creative and fun projects or fashion. Since then, it has evolved into one of the best things I could ever have done with my time! The last few years of blogging have become much more personal to me- more of a way to document this life of mine, with my husband, with my little boy and with the world around me. I enjoy sharing glimpses into our days and sharing in other mom’s lives as well, as part of this wonderful world of social media. Being a mother is better than anything I could have expected! Truly. I call Ohio my home, I keep the joy of traveling and exploring new places close to my heart, i spend my evenings knitting and am never without a book in my hand or in my purse. My blog is much of the same! You can find me on Instagram at instagram.com/ohreneedesign.

  1. Those smoothie packets sound amaaaazing! I will have to get some!
Your sweet Mia is PRECIOUS! I have a little Mia as well :)

    • Hey new commenter! Thanks for stopping by. The smoothie packets ARE delicious and this reminds me, we’re all out. On the grocery list they go. You have a Mia, too? Cool. I’ll have to check out your blog :)

  2. Acai drinks are the best (and Berlin loves them!). I’m jealous of your heat, I’ll trade you any day for our never ending SF fog!

    • Acai! Have you found that it’s really hard to find, or is it just me? So far, I’ve only come across it at Sprouts (to use in my own personally made smoothies) and at 2 other acai bowl cafes (one in San Diego and the other in Santa Barbara). We’d love to have more of it in our lives. And, I may have to take you up on that trade :) I love SF.

  3. Yes! So many awesome idea for beating the heat. I’ve so much been loving watching you and Mia keeping cool this summer and can’t wait to follow along as you tick the rest of those items off your summer to-do list! :)

    • Aw, thanks Dena! I sweat and overheat pretty easily so if we decide to get out of the house on a hot day, you better believe it will be to do something that keeps ME cool, too! We’re having a blast tackling out bucket list, thanks for the love :)
