You Scream, Ice Cream {Miss Misty’s Art Class}

I created this art project for my Pre-Kindergarten 4 year olds.  They gave it to their dads for Father’s Day.

This is inspired by a painting called Three Ice Cream Cones, by the artist Wayne Thiebaud.

My students learned that Wayne Thiebaud was an American painter, born in 1920. His most famous works are of cakes, pastries, toys and lipsticks and he was associated with the pop-art movement.

Drawing paper, pencil, eraser, crayons, black Sharpie

I first instructed my students to draw 2 parallel lines towards the bottom of their paper.  Since they’re only 4 years old and need extra assistance, I placed 3 “dots” in the shape of an upside-down triangle for them to connect in creating the 3 cones.  The next step is to draw the 1st scoop of ice cream, and then the 2nd.  Last, they drew an “X” in the top half and one in the bottom half of their cones.  Instead of using similar colors that Thiebaud used, I chose to add an extra layer to the art lesson by having them only use “primary colors” for the bottom scoops and “secondary colors” for the top scoops.  I explained that the primary colors have a very important job of mixing together to make the rest of the rainbow colors.  Red + Blue = Purple, Red + Yellow = Orange, Blue + Yellow = Green.  They used crayons to add the colors and we even used similar colors to add depth and shadows, seen in the bottom example.
